"Sunday, Monday or always" - - Van Heusen & Burke

Casual Fridays

What I Ate by Kitty Kaufman

It's an old song and it's true. Some things are timeless and TGIFriday's is one. Whether you're looking for lunch, dinner or an oasis in stormy weather (Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler, 1933), it's the place to be as time goes by (Herman Hupfeld, 1931; Dooley Wilson sang it in 1942.)

If drinks are in order, go east of the sun and west of the moon (Brooks Bowman, 1934 at Princeton): Long Island tea, Bahama mama, West Indies yellow bird Listen here, Hawaiian volcanoes, Lynchburg lemonades, Sunset Strips, lights of Havana, Manhattans, Hollywood nights (Bob Seger, 1978), white Russians, Alabama slammers, Singapore slings, Cape Codders Listen here, café Toledos and Colorado bull dogs.

Laugh at the weather with a blue storm or big hurricane, mudslides, sea breezes and frozen Cosmopolitans. Go sailing with margaritas, electric lemonade (which is blue), cranberry coolers, grasshoppers, chocolate monkeys and dreamsicles.

Appetizers like nachos, quesadillas, pot stickers, wings and loaded potato skins are the prelude to a long list of hearty entrees. Grill favorites: salmon, chicken, ribs and steak come with sides of vegetables, potatoes loaded or mashed, onion rings, fries, soup, salads and thankfully, not all at the same time.

You can have chicken your way: with orange, with lemon, grilled, marinated and in fingers. Pastas are topped with shrimp marinara, grilled vegetables, Alfredo and salsa. Seafood choices: fried shrimp, fish and chips and salmon. And when only a burger will do, add mushrooms, onions, bacon, barbeque sauce, cheese and pickles.
